The Story of the Stach

Why Horace Slughorn's Mustache Matters

Jim Broadbent joined the Harry Potter series in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) as Horace Slughorn, the returning Potions master with a weakness for comfort, crystallized pineapple, and well-connected students. The mustache arrived with him: a full, pale walrus that spills over the lip like a man who has never once been in a hurry.

Slughorn is written as a large, genial figure, and Broadbent plays him as equal parts host and coward. The mustache softens every scene — it makes his flattery feel cozy rather than sinister, which is exactly what the character needs to be before the story reveals the memory he has been hiding.

Among the Hogwarts faculty, it is the most luxurious lip on staff, and it pairs beautifully with the waistcoats.
