About the Dalí

The Dalí is a narrow mustache with long, thin points that are waxed stiff and curved steeply upward — sometimes straight up, sometimes arcing past the eyes. Unlike the Handlebar, the body of the mustache is kept slim and the points are not curled into loops; they are drawn out into long, rigid spikes. The effect is less "distinguished gentleman" and more "melting clock."

Named for surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, whose mustache was as much a work of art as anything on his canvases, this is the most flamboyant recognized mustache style. It is a competition category, a conversation piece, and a daily commitment to wax. Nobody wears a Dalí by accident.

History of the Dalí

Salvador Dalí (1904 to 1989) began growing his famous mustache in the 1920s, reportedly inspired by the thin, waxed mustache of 17th-century Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. Over the decades it grew longer and more extreme, and Dalí used it as a prop in photographs, interviews, and performance — most famously in Philippe Halsman's 1954 photo book Dalí's Mustache, in which the artist bends, splits, and ties it into impossible shapes. He called it his "antennae" for receiving artistic inspiration.

After Dalí's death the style lived on mostly through homage. Actors who have portrayed him — Robert Pattinson in Little Ashes, Adrien Brody in Midnight in Paris, Ben Kingsley in Dalíland — have all worn the points. Competitive mustache growers adopted it as a formal category: the World Beard and Moustache Championships define the Dalí as narrow, with long points bent or curved steeply upward, with no hair from the cheeks or chin.

It remains a niche style for the bold. When Dalí's body was exhumed in 2017 for a paternity test, officials reported that the mustache was still intact, pointing at ten past ten, which tells you everything about the style's staying power.

🌱 How to Grow the Dalí

Growing a Dalí

Grow for length, not bulk. You need 4 to 6 months of uncut growth at the outer corners of the lip. The body of the mustache can stay slim, so unlike the Imperial, you do not need dense cheek or lip hair — but the corner hairs must become long.
Keep the center tidy. From week 3, trim the center third along the lip line so the mouth is clear. The Dalí is narrow; do not let the middle section grow down over the lip.
Keep the top narrow. Maintain a clean top edge beneath the nose and shave any cheek hair. The body should be a slim band, 1 cm or so tall at the center.
Train the points. From month 2, comb the corners outward and begin waxing them into a single strand on each side, twisting tightly between thumb and finger. The goal is a cord, not a brush.
Raise the angle. As length arrives (month 4 onward), wax the cords and lift them progressively steeper each week: 45 degrees, then 60, then nearly vertical. The hair takes the set over time.
Go long. A Dalí point of 5 to 8 cm is respectable; the master's own reached much further.

A convincing Dalí is a 6-to-9-month project, and every single day of it involves wax.

✂ How to Trim the Dalí

Trimming a Dalí

Points are untouchable. The spikes are the style. Do not cut them except to remove a split end, and then only a millimeter at the very tip.
Center lip line. Every week, comb down and trim the center third along the top of the lip with scissors so the mouth is free and the points appear to emerge from the sides.
Body height. Keep the main band slim. Every 2 weeks, tidy the top edge just under the nostrils. Do not let it grow into a wide Chevron body; the Dalí's drama comes from thin lines.
Outer boundaries. Shave the cheeks and any hair beyond the lip area. Everything in the points should originate from the corners of the lip.
Thinning the cords. If the points are too thick to hold a tight spike, thin them slightly by snipping a few hairs from the underside of each cord near the base, never near the tip.
Match lengths. Measure each point from the corner of the mouth to the tip. Trim only the longer one, and only if the difference is more than a few millimeters and wax cannot compensate.

Trim with the mustache unwaxed and combed into its natural shape. The true length is always shorter than it looks when waxed.

Dalí Care Routine

Morning

Wash and towel to damp. Apply 2 drops of beard oil to the body and the bases of the cords; keep oil off the last few centimeters, or the wax will not hold.
Comb the body outward. Warm a firm or extra-firm wax and work each corner into a tight cord, twisting as you go. Lift to your desired angle and hold for 15 seconds. A brief blast of cool air from a hairdryer sets it.
