Why J.J. McClure's Mustache Matters
The Cannonball Run (1981) is less a movie than a party Burt Reynolds threw for his friends, and J.J. McClure is the host. He and his partner Victor Prinzi (Dom DeLuise) enter an illegal coast-to-coast road race in an ambulance, reasoning that nobody pulls over an ambulance. The plan works about as well as you would expect.
Reynolds wears the chevron that made him the biggest box-office star of the late 1970s — thick, dark, and perfectly groomed even at 120 miles an hour. Director Hal Needham, a former stuntman, built the film around Reynolds's easy charm, and the mustache is the centerpiece of every grin.
It is a lighter, sillier lip than the Bandit's, but it comes from the same face, and the mustache committee sees no reason to hold the ambulance against it.
- *The Cannonball Run* (1981) was directed by stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham and inspired by a real unsanctioned cross-country race.
- The cast included Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Jackie Chan.
- Dom DeLuise's character Victor Prinzi has an alter ego named Captain Chaos.
How to Grow the Chevron
The Tom Selleck. Thick, wide, and confident. The default setting for a man who means business.
