Why The Mad Doctor's Mustache Matters
The Mad Doctor (1933) is the Mickey Mouse short that scared the children of 1933 and, by accident of paperwork, belongs to everybody today. A black-cloaked scientist known only as Dr. XXX snatches Pluto off his doghouse and carries him to a castle laboratory, where he plans to graft the dog onto a chicken "just to see what happens." Mickey gives chase through collapsing stairs, walking skeletons and a buzzsaw table before waking up — it was all a nightmare.
The doctor himself is a great piece of early-1930s villain design: a skull on the door, a billowing cloak, and a face that is mostly mustache. The lip is a thick black handlebar with both ends swept sharply upward, paired with a pointed goatee, and it does all the character work — every gloat and cackle is drawn on that mustache first.
The short was reportedly banned by some censors for being too frightening, and Walt Disney Productions never renewed its copyright, which is why frames from it sit on Wikimedia Commons as public domain. The Mad Doctor returned decades later as a major character in the Epic Mickey video games, mustache intact.
