The Story of the Stach

Why Blain Cooper's Mustache Matters

Predator (1987) is an action film assembled almost entirely from biceps, and Jesse Ventura's Blain is the biggest pile of them. A former professional wrestler and future governor of Minnesota, Ventura brought his own ring-ready horseshoe mustache to the jungle, and it fit the character like the bandolier.

Blain chews tobacco, carries a handheld minigun he calls "Ol' Painless," and delivers the immortal line "I ain't got time to bleed." The mustache is not styled so much as deployed — a thick, downturned horseshoe that makes him look like he could take on the alien with his bare hands and would have preferred to.

It is one of the defining 1980s action mustaches, up there with the era's best, and it proves that a horseshoe is the only correct facial hair for a man carrying a weapon that large.

Fun Facts
  • Jesse Ventura (born 1951) was a professional wrestler before acting and was elected governor of Minnesota in 1998.
  • "I ain't got time to bleed" later became the title of Ventura's 1999 autobiography.
  • *Predator* was directed by John McTiernan and released in June 1987.
  • Blain's minigun "Ol' Painless" was a real M134 that had to be powered by an external electric supply during filming.
