Why Captain Spaulding's Mustache Matters
"Hooray for Captain Spaulding!" Groucho Marx enters Animal Crackers (1930) to a musical fanfare as Captain Jeffrey T. Spaulding, a famous African explorer who is guest of honor at a society party and who immediately makes it clear he would rather be anywhere else. The mustache, as always with Groucho, is painted on with greasepaint — a broad black stroke that reads from the back row.
Groucho's mustache began in vaudeville as a time-saver: he once arrived late and smeared greasepaint on instead of gluing on a false mustache, and the audience laughed just as hard. The painted lip became his trademark, along with the eyebrows, the glasses, and the cigar.
Captain Spaulding gave the world the elephant-in-my-pajamas joke and cemented the greasepaint mustache as one of the most recognizable in comedy. It is technically not a real mustache. It is spiritually one of the greatest ever worn.
- *Animal Crackers* (1930) was adapted from the Marx Brothers' 1928 Broadway musical of the same name.
