Why Daniel Plainview's Mustache Matters
Daniel Plainview is a man who drinks your milkshake, and he does it beneath one of the most imposing mustaches of the 21st century. Daniel Day-Lewis's Oscar-winning oil prospector in Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood (2007) wears a thick, dark, period-correct chevron that sits like a shelf above a mouth full of quiet threats.
The look evolves with the character. Early on, the mustache is part of a respectable businessman's costume; by the end, in the bowling alley of his mansion, it is graying, unkempt and frankly frightening. Few actors have ever used a mustache to chart a descent into madness so effectively.
Combined with Day-Lewis's Bill the Butcher handlebar, it makes a strong case that he is the greatest villain-mustache actor of his era.
