Why Doc Holliday's Mustache Matters
Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday is widely considered the performance of Tombstone, and the mustache is part of the costume. Where Wyatt's horseshoe is all weight and menace, Doc's is lighter, a little sparse at the edges, and trimmed like a gentleman who still dresses for dinner even when he is coughing blood into a handkerchief.
The look communicates the character instantly: Southern, educated, dying, and dangerous. The pale complexion and the sweat-damp hair make the mustache pop even more, and Kilmer plays most of his best lines — "I'm your huckleberry," "You're a daisy if you do" — with a lazy half-smile that the mustache frames perfectly.
It is a reminder that a great movie mustache does not have to be enormous. Doc's is a supporting player to Kilmer's performance, never the star, and that restraint is exactly why it lands.
