The 10 Greatest TV Mustaches of All Time, Ranked

Television is the natural habitat of the mustache. Movies give a mustache two hours. TV gives it years, and sometimes decades, to grow into a character. These are the ten that grew the most.

Ranking criteria: iconic status, how essential the mustache is to the character, and how many arguments it started in the Mr. Stach conference room.

10. Captain Kangaroo (Bob Keeshan)

The original kids' TV mustache. Gentle, walrus-adjacent, and on the air from 1955 to 1984. An entire generation learned what a mustache was from this man.

9. Geraldo Rivera

A broadcaster's mustache, worn through decades of interviews, specials, and one famously empty vault. Whatever you think of the journalism, the mustache never wavered.

8. Cliff Clavin (John Ratzenberger), Cheers

5. Burt Reynolds (as himself, mostly)

Burt Reynolds (1936–2018) was a movie star first, but his mustache practically lived on television through talk-show appearances, Evening Shade (1990–1994), and decades of reruns. The Reynolds is a confident chevron with a wink built in. It deserves a spot in any TV hall.

4. Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck), Magnum, P.I.

Is it cheating to rank the same mustache twice? We took a vote. It is not. The Blue Bloods version, gray and dignified over fourteen seasons, is a different character in a different century, and it proves that a great mustache can carry authority as convincingly as it once carried swagger.

2. Gomez Addams (John Astin), The Addams Family

The 1964–1966 series gave us a pencil-thin mustache worn with manic joy. Astin's Gomez was a walking argument that a mustache could be elegant and unhinged at the same time. Every pencil mustache on television since has been, in some small way, Gomez.

1. Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman), Parks and Recreation

From 2009 to 2015, Nick Offerman played a libertarian parks director whose mustache was so central to the character that it had its own gravitational pull. Dense, squared-off, and utterly serious, the Swanson was the mustache that made a new generation realize mustaches could be cool without being ironic.

Offerman himself is a woodworker, humorist, and actor who has spoken and written at length about craftsmanship and self-reliance, which only deepened the effect. Character and actor reinforced each other until the mustache became a symbol. It revived the style for the 2010s, and it earned the top spot.
