About Lanny McDonald
Lanny McDonald was born in 1953 in Hanna, Alberta, and became one of the NHL\'s most beloved players. He starred for the Toronto Maple Leafs (1973–1979), spent two seasons with the Colorado Rockies, and then found a home with the Calgary Flames, where he scored 66 goals in 1982–83.
In 1989, in his final season, he scored his 500th career goal and then scored in the Cup-clinching game as the Flames won their first Stanley Cup. He retired on top with 500 goals and 1,006 points.
McDonald was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992 and later served as chairman of its board. His number 9 is retired by Calgary.
Why the Stach Became Iconic
A red, bushy walrus of a mustache that seemed to grow wider every season, usually photographed beneath a helmetless head of curls and a grin. The image of McDonald raising the Stanley Cup in 1989, mustache gleaming, is one of hockey\'s most famous photographs.
He is the benchmark by which every hockey mustache is measured, and nobody has measured up.
