About Larry Bird
Larry Joe Bird was born in 1956 in West Baden Springs, Indiana, and grew up in French Lick. After briefly enrolling at Indiana University he went home, worked for the town, and eventually landed at Indiana State, which he carried to an undefeated regular season and the 1979 NCAA championship game against Magic Johnson's Michigan State, still the most-watched college basketball game ever.
With the Boston Celtics (1979–1992) he was Rookie of the Year, a three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986), three-time MVP (1984–1986), 12-time All-Star and a member of the 1992 Dream Team. His rivalry with Magic Johnson is credited with reviving the NBA. He was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1998.
He then became the only person ever named NBA MVP, Coach of the Year (Indiana Pacers, 1998) and Executive of the Year (Pacers, 2012).
Why the Stach Became Iconic
Bird's blond, slightly wispy mustache was unglamorous and he did not care, which is exactly why it worked. It was the mustache of a guy who would tell you which spot he was going to shoot from and then shoot from it.
It defined the 1980s Celtics look alongside the short shorts and the feathered hair, and it is forever frozen in the image of him and Magic Johnson standing side by side.
