About Patrick Ewing
Patrick Aloysius Ewing was born in 1962 in Kingston, Jamaica, and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts as a boy. At Georgetown he led John Thompson's Hoyas to three national title games and the 1984 championship, and he won Olympic gold in 1984 before the New York Knicks won the first-ever draft lottery and took him first overall in 1985.
Ewing was Rookie of the Year in 1986 and spent 15 seasons as the franchise cornerstone, an 11-time All-Star and the Knicks' all-time leader in points and rebounds. He carried them to the 1994 NBA Finals and a second Eastern Conference title in 1999, and he was a member of the original 1992 Dream Team. He finished with Seattle and Orlando, retiring in 2002.
He was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2008 (and again in 2010 with the Dream Team), spent years as an NBA assistant coach, and returned to Georgetown as head coach from 2017 to 2023.
Why the Stach Became Iconic
Ewing's mustache was a constant through two decades of New York basketball: trim, dark and unbothered by trends, the same in 1985 as in 2000. It is the mustache of consistency, which is exactly what he gave the Knicks for 15 years.
In a league that went through fades, goatees and clean-shaven eras, he simply never changed. That is its own kind of dominance.
