The Story

About Hulk Hogan

Terry Gene Bollea was born in 1953 in Augusta, Georgia, and raised in Tampa, Florida. Wrestling as Hulk Hogan, he became the most famous professional wrestler in the world, winning the WWF Championship from Andre the Giant\'s former rival the Iron Sheik in January 1984 and headlining the first WrestleMania in 1985.

"Hulkamania" powered wrestling\'s 1980s boom, with Hogan\'s red-and-yellow gear, ripped shirts, and "say your prayers and eat your vitamins" catchphrases making him a crossover star in cartoons, movies, and commercials. In 1996 he reinvented himself as the villainous "Hollywood" Hogan, leading the nWo in WCW.

He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. Hogan died in July 2025 at the age of 71.

The Verdict

Why the Stach Became Iconic

The platinum-blond horseshoe is arguably the most famous mustache of the 1980s — full stop, any category. It dropped straight down past the jawline, framed by a bandana and the "24-inch pythons." It went dark for the nWo years, proving that a mustache can turn heel too.

Generations of kids drew it on themselves with markers.
