Why Thunderlips's Mustache Matters
Before Hulkamania, there was Thunderlips. In Rocky III (1982), Sylvester Stallone cast a then-rising wrestler named Hulk Hogan as Thunderlips, "The Ultimate Male," who faces Rocky Balboa in a boxer-versus-wrestler charity exhibition that goes off the rails the moment Thunderlips decides to actually fight.
Hogan arrives with the full kit: the blond hair, the tan, and the bright blond horseshoe mustache that would become one of the most famous faces in sports entertainment over the following decade. The scene is pure spectacle — Thunderlips hurls Rocky into the crowd, Paulie swings a stool, and the whole thing ends with a photo op.
It was Hogan's first major film role and a preview of everything to come. The horseshoe was already perfect. Hollywood just saw it first.
- *Rocky III* (1982) was written and directed by Sylvester Stallone and also introduced Mr. T as Clubber Lang.
- Hulk Hogan (1953–2025) went on to become the face of the World Wrestling Federation in the 1980s.
- Thunderlips's ring nickname in the film is "The Ultimate Male."
How to Grow the Horseshoe
The biker. The wrestler. The guy at the end of the bar you do not challenge to arm wrestling.
