Why Jackie Moon's Mustache Matters
Jackie Moon is a man of many titles. He owns the Flint Tropics of the American Basketball Association, coaches them, plays for them, and sings the national anthem before the games, all on the strength of a single disco hit. Will Ferrell plays him in Semi-Pro (2008) with a full head of curly hair and a thick 1970s chevron that looks borrowed from a basketball card.
Ferrell's mustache here is a sequel of sorts to Ron Burgundy's, transplanted from the newsroom to the hardwood. It gives Jackie the self-assurance of a man who has never once doubted his own greatness, which is essential when your team is fighting to survive the ABA-NBA merger.
The film is set in 1976 and every detail — the afros, the wide collars, the mustache — commits to the era. Jackie Moon may be semi-pro on the court, but the lip is fully professional.
