The Story

About Will Ferrell

John William Ferrell was born in Irvine, California, in 1967 and studied sports information at USC before joining the Los Angeles comedy troupe The Groundlings. He was hired by Saturday Night Live in 1995 and over seven seasons became one of the show's all-time great cast members, with impressions ranging from Alex Trebek (in the "Celebrity Jeopardy!" sketches) to George W. Bush and the immortal "More Cowbell."

His film career exploded in 2003 and 2004 with Old School, Elf, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. As San Diego news anchor Ron Burgundy, Ferrell wore a burgundy suit, read whatever was on the teleprompter, and sported a thick 1970s mustache that he grew for the part and has reprised for the 2013 sequel and countless in-character appearances.

Talladega Nights (2006), Blades of Glory (2007), Step Brothers (2008), and The Other Guys (2010) followed. He co-founded the comedy site Funny or Die, received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2011, and has continued to alternate broad comedies with dramatic work like Stranger than Fiction (2006).

Why the Stach Became Iconic

The Ron Burgundy mustache is a love letter to 1970s local-news facial hair, and Ferrell wore it with such total commitment that it stopped being a costume and became a character. It is thick, dark, a little too proud of itself, and exactly what a man who owns many leather-bound books would grow.

Ferrell has since shown up in character, mustache included, on real news broadcasts, at sporting events, and in a series of Dodge commercials. Few fake anchors have logged more on-air mustache hours than this one.
