About Kurt Russell
Kurt Vogel Russell was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1951, the son of actor Bing Russell, and was a Disney child star through the 1960s and early 1970s. He also played minor-league baseball as a second baseman until a shoulder injury ended that career, at which point acting took over for good.
His partnership with director John Carpenter reinvented him as an action star: Escape from New York (1981), The Thing (1982), and Big Trouble in Little China (1986). Then, in Tombstone (1993), he played Wyatt Earp with a magnificent, drooping handlebar mustache and delivered some of the most quoted lines in modern Western history. The mustache has been a fan obsession ever since.
Russell has kept working steadily for six decades: Stargate (1994), Miracle (2004), The Hateful Eight (2015), Bone Tomahawk (2015), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). He has been partnered with Goldie Hawn since 1983, and the two have become one of Hollywood's most durable couples.
Why the Stach Became Iconic
The Tombstone mustache is the best Western mustache of the modern era and it was not even the only great one in the movie (Sam Elliott and Val Kilmer were right there). Russell's handlebar was long, dark, and slightly wild, the kind of mustache a frontier lawman grows when he has more important things to do than trim.
Russell has revisited big frontier facial hair in The Hateful Eight and Bone Tomahawk, which suggests that he, too, knows where his strengths lie.
