The Story

About Henry Cavill

Henry William Dalgliesh Cavill was born in 1983 on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands. After boarding school and early film roles, he broke through as Charles Brandon in Showtime's The Tudors (2007–2010), and in 2013 he became Superman in Man of Steel, a role he reprised in Batman v Superman (2016) and Justice League (2017).

Then came the mustache. For Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), Cavill grew a thick, dark chevron to play CIA enforcer August Walker, and when he was called back for Justice League reshoots, Paramount would not let him shave it. Warner Bros. digitally removed the mustache in post-production, with results the internet has not stopped discussing since. Meanwhile, Fallout was a critical and commercial hit and gave the world the "arm reload" gif.

Cavill went on to star as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's The Witcher (2019–2023), Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes (2020, 2022), and the lead in Argylle (2024). He is also a famously enthusiastic PC gamer and Warhammer fan, and he is attached to a Warhammer 40,000 series for Amazon.

The Cavill mustache is the rare modern lip that generated its own news cycle. It was so thick and so committed that a studio reportedly spent a fortune trying to erase it rather than ask him to shave, and it still won.

In Fallout itself, it did exactly what a great mustache should: it made a handsome man look genuinely dangerous. Proof that the mustache is alive and well in the blockbuster era.
