The Story of the Stach

Why August Walker's Mustache Matters

August Walker is the CIA's hammer in Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), a brick wall of a man sent to shadow Ethan Hunt and, eventually, to fight him in a Paris restroom. Henry Cavill plays him with a thick, dark chevron that became a plot point in real life before the film even came out.

Cavill was contractually required to keep the mustache during Fallout, which overlapped with reshoots for Justice League (2017). The solution was to remove the mustache digitally in the Superman scenes, and the internet spent months analyzing the results. Rarely has a single lip generated so much discussion.

Within the film, the mustache does what a good villain mustache should. It makes Walker look older, harder, and more old-fashioned than the IMF team — a man from a blunter era. The scene where he reloads his arms like shotguns in the bathroom fight is, in the opinion of this organization, the mustache's finest hour.

Fun Facts
  • *Mission: Impossible – Fallout* was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie and released in 2018.
  • Cavill's mustache was digitally removed for *Justice League* reshoots because his *Fallout* contract required him to keep it.
  • The bathroom fight scene in Paris is widely cited as one of the best hand-to-hand sequences in the franchise.
