Why Dr. Ivo Robotnik's Mustache Matters
Dr. Eggman has had a gigantic mustache in video games since 1991, so when Jim Carrey was cast as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), the question was how the movie would get there. The answer was a slow burn: Carrey begins with a tightly trimmed, ferociously groomed chevron and ends the first film marooned on a mushroom planet with a lip that has gone gloriously feral.
Carrey's performance is pure rubber-faced mania, and the mustache is a co-star — it twitches, bristles and gets stroked menacingly. By Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) the full Eggman silhouette is in place, bald dome and all.
It is a rare example of a movie mustache with a character arc.
