Why Borat Sagdiyev's Mustache Matters
Few mustaches have achieved the global recognition of Borat's. Sacha Baron Cohen's gray-suited, enthusiastic journalist is built from a handful of elements — the accent, the catchphrases, the swimsuit we will not discuss — and a thick, slightly untidy chevron that has become a Halloween staple.
The mustache is the key to the character's disguise. It is bushy enough to be cartoonish but real enough that the real-world people Borat encountered in the 2006 film took him seriously. That balance is what makes the look work comedically.
Baron Cohen returned as Borat in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020), and the mustache, naturally, returned with him.
- The 2006 film was directed by Larry Charles and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
- Borat first appeared on Baron Cohen's *Da Ali G Show* before getting his own film.
- Sacha Baron Cohen was born in 1971 in London.
- *Borat Subsequent Moviefilm* (2020) earned Maria Bakalova an Oscar nomination.
How to Grow the Chevron
The Tom Selleck. Thick, wide, and confident. The default setting for a man who means business.
