Why Ned Flanders's Mustache Matters
Ned Flanders has lived next door to the Simpsons since 1989, and in all that time his mustache has not changed a hair. It is a full, bushy chevron rendered in about four pen strokes, sitting beneath round glasses and above a green sweater, and it has become one of the most recognizable cartoon mustaches in the world.
The look is intentionally square — Ned is the straight man to Homer's chaos — but the show has had fun revealing what is underneath the sweater. The episode where Ned is shown to be surprisingly muscular ("stupid sexy Flanders") recontextualized the mustache as the facial hair of a secretly ripped man, which only added to the legend.
Ned's mustache is a staple of costume parties and Movember fundraising, because it requires only a sweater, glasses and a commitment to saying "diddly."
