Why Frank Reagan's Mustache Matters
When Blue Bloods premiered on CBS in 2010, it gave Tom Selleck a role that fit his mustache like a dress uniform. Frank Reagan is the NYPD Police Commissioner, a widower, a former Marine, and the patriarch of a family of cops who argue about the job over Sunday dinner. The chevron came with him, now silver, and it has never looked more authoritative.
Where Thomas Magnum's mustache was playful, Frank Reagan's is institutional. It sits under the reading glasses and above the pressed collar, and it lends every speech about duty and conscience an extra layer of gravity. It is the mustache of a man who has read the rulebook and written a few chapters himself.
The series ran fourteen seasons, which means Selleck has now spent roughly as long as Police Commissioner as he did as a Hawaiian private investigator. Both characters are in the Hall; the mustache never left.
