The Story

About Frank Hamer

Francis Augustus Hamer (1884–1955) joined the Texas Rangers in 1906 and served in and out of the force for decades, working cases that ranged from border violence to oil-boom towns to organized crime. He survived numerous gunfights and was wounded many times over his career.

In 1934 he was brought out of retirement to track Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. After months of pursuit he led the posse that ambushed the pair in Louisiana in May of that year, an event that ended one of the most notorious crime sprees of the Depression era.

Hamer was also known for investigating a 1918 massacre of Mexican-American civilians at Porvenir, Texas, and for opposing the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s. He was portrayed by Kevin Costner in the 2019 film "The Highwaymen."

The Verdict

Why the Stach Became Iconic

Hamer wore a short, no-nonsense mustache in his later years, the kind that belongs under a wide-brimmed hat and above a set jaw. It matched a reputation for being unhurried and unshakable.

He earns his place as the twentieth-century face of the Ranger tradition.
