Why Mario's Mustache Matters
Mario's mustache is older than most of the people who wear one. It was drawn by Shigeru Miyamoto for Donkey Kong in 1981 because, at the resolution of an arcade screen, a mustache was easier to render than a mouth. Forty-two years later, The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) put that mustache on thousands of cinema screens in full animated detail, voiced by Chris Pratt.
The film, produced by Illumination and Nintendo, follows Mario and his brother Luigi from a Brooklyn plumbing business into the Mushroom Kingdom, where Mario teams up with Princess Peach and Toad to face Bowser. Through all of it, the mustache stays thick, dark, and perfectly chevron-shaped — arguably the most consistent lip in entertainment.
