The Story

About Baker Mayfield

Baker Reagan Mayfield was born in 1995 in Austin, Texas, and took the long way to the top of the sport. He walked on at Texas Tech, won the starting job as a true freshman, then transferred to Oklahoma and walked on again. By 2017 he was the Heisman Trophy winner and the face of college football, and the Cleveland Browns made him the first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

In Cleveland (2018–2021) he set the rookie touchdown-pass record at the time and, in the 2020 season, quarterbacked the Browns to their first playoff win since the 1994 season. After a bumpy 2022 split between Carolina and the Los Angeles Rams, he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023 and rebuilt his career, leading the Bucs to consecutive NFC South titles and earning Pro Bowl selections.

Along the way he became one of the most recognizable faces in football, not least because of a long-running series of insurance commercials in which he and the mustache lived inside the Browns' stadium.

The Verdict

Why the Stach Became Iconic

From the start of his pro career Mayfield wore a thick horseshoe that dropped straight down past the corners of his mouth, a look that belonged more to a 1970s linebacker than a modern franchise quarterback. The mustache became a symbol of his whole persona: chippy, unbothered, a little bit throwback.

Fans wore fake horseshoes to games, kids grew them for Halloween, and for a few seasons "the Baker" was a legitimate request at barbershops across Ohio. That is how a mustache earns a Hall of Fame plaque.
