The Story

About Mike "Fluff" Cowan

Michael "Fluff" Cowan was born in 1948 in Winthrop, Maine, and has been carrying bags on the PGA Tour since the mid-1970s. He spent nearly two decades caddying for Peter Jacobsen before a 20-year-old Tiger Woods hired him in 1996.

Cowan was on Woods's bag for the 1997 Masters, when Tiger won by 12 strokes, and for the start of the greatest run in modern golf. In 1999 he joined Jim Furyk, a partnership that lasted more than two decades and included the 2003 U.S. Open and the 2010 FedEx Cup. Few caddies have ever been as recognizable as the man with the gray mustache and the wraparound sunglasses.

He is also a devoted Grateful Dead fan, reportedly with hundreds of shows under his belt.

The Verdict

Why the Stach Became Iconic

Walking beside the most famous golfer on Earth in 1997 turned a caddie's mustache into a household face. The broad gray walrus, drooping under the nose and past the lip, became the single most recognizable thing on the bag, and "Fluff" got endorsement deals of his own.

He is proof that the mustache does not need to swing the club to make the highlight reel.
