About the Lampshade

The Lampshade is a short, tidy mustache that sits above the upper lip in a trapezoid: narrower at the top beneath the nose, wider at the bottom, with straight, angled sides and a flat lower edge that stops at or just short of the corners of the mouth. It is trimmed short enough not to touch the lip. Seen head-on, the silhouette resembles a classic lampshade.

It is the most buttoned-up of the full mustaches — neat, contained, and compatible with nearly every dress code and grooming regulation. The Lampshade has a long run as the mustache of comedians, broadcasters, and a great many dads. It does not ask for wax or patience; it asks for a trimmer and five minutes a week.

History of the Lampshade

Short, squared-off mustaches have been standard issue for working professionals since the mid-20th century, when military and police grooming codes typically permitted a trimmed mustache that did not extend past the lip or the mouth corners. The Lampshade is essentially that regulation-friendly shape elevated to a named style: full, dark, and tidy.

It became a pop-culture signature in American comedy and television from the 1970s through the 1990s. Richard Pryor wore a version; Eddie Murphy's 1980s mustache was a textbook Lampshade; Steve Harvey made it part of his brand for decades; Geraldo Rivera's broadcast mustache hovered between Lampshade and Chevron for forty years. Animated television even gave it a mascot in Ned Flanders.

Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat turned the shape into a comedic icon in 2006 — a bushy, slightly exaggerated Lampshade that reintroduced a generation to the style. Today it is the go-to mustache for men who want something visible but not dramatic, and it remains one of the few big-name styles that fits inside most workplace grooming policies.

Face-shape guidance is general. Every face is the right face for a mustache if you commit hard enough.

🌱 How to Grow the Lampshade

Growing a Lampshade

  1. Grow for 3 to 4 weeks. Let the entire upper lip fill in so you can see your density and the natural width of your growth.
  2. Set the width. The bottom of the Lampshade should stop at the corners of the mouth — or a few millimeters inside them. Shave any hair beyond that point.
  3. Angle the sides. This is what makes it a Lampshade instead of a Chevron. With a precision trimmer, shave the outer edges so they angle inward as they rise, forming a trapezoid narrower at the top than the bottom. The top corners should sit roughly beneath the outer edges of the nostrils.
  4. Keep the bottom flat. Trim the lower edge in a straight, level line that sits just above the top of the upper lip. The hair should not hang over the lip.
  5. Trim the length. Run a trimmer with a 4 mm to 6 mm guard over the body. The Lampshade is short and dense; it should look like a solid block, not a bush.
  6. Let it darken. A freshly cut Lampshade can look thin. After 2 weeks of maintenance it fills and reads as a clean, solid shape.

From clean-shaven to a finished Lampshade takes about 4 to 5 weeks.

✂ How to Trim the Lampshade

Trimming a Lampshade

  • Bottom edge weekly. Comb down and trim the lower edge straight across, just above the upper lip, using scissors or a trimmer with no guard held flat against a comb. The line should be level from corner to corner.
  • Angled sides weekly. Re-shave the diagonal outer edges with a precision trimmer. Keep the angle consistent; sight down the line with your head tilted back and compare both sides. A common mistake is letting one side drift vertical, which makes the shape look lopsided.
  • Length every 5 to 7 days. Trim the body with a 4 mm to 6 mm guard, combing against the grain first so every hair is cut evenly.
  • Top edge. Tidy strays beneath the nose; do not shave a hard horizontal line under the nostrils.
  • Density. If the shape looks patchy after a length trim, skip the next one and let it fill before cutting again.

The Lampshade is among the quickest mustaches to maintain: five minutes once a week keeps it sharp.

🧴 Recommended Grooming Routine

Lampshade Care Routine

Daily

  • Wash with a gentle face or beard wash; pat dry.
  • Comb downward with a small fine-tooth comb.
  • One drop of beard oil or a pea of balm keeps it soft and lying flat. Short hair needs less product; too much looks greasy.

Weekly

  • Bottom-edge and side trim.
  • Length trim with a guard.
  • Gently exfoliate the shaved areas beside the mustache.

Monthly

  • Take a straight-on photo to confirm the trapezoid is symmetrical.

Notes

  • Because the Lampshade is short and neat, it is one of the best styles for anyone under a workplace grooming policy — always confirm your own department's rules.
  • Brushing it straight up with a boar-bristle brush before trimming helps you find stray long hairs.

The Lampshade asks for almost nothing. Give it a comb and a trimmer and it will show up to work on time.
