The Story

About Grover Cleveland

Stephen Grover Cleveland (1837–1908) was born in Caldwell, New Jersey, and rose from sheriff of Erie County to mayor of Buffalo to governor of New York in just three years. He was elected the 22nd President of the United States in 1884, lost his re-election bid in 1888 despite winning the popular vote, and returned to win again in 1892 as the 24th president.

He was the first Democrat elected after the Civil War and the only president (until 2024) to serve two non-consecutive terms. Known for honesty and a stubborn streak, he vetoed more bills than all his predecessors combined and fought patronage, tariffs, and the free-silver movement.

He married 21-year-old Frances Folsom in the White House in 1886, the only president to wed there, and died in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1908.
