About William Howard Taft
William Howard Taft (1857–1930) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was the 27th President of the United States (1909–1913). Before the presidency he was a federal judge, Solicitor General, the first civilian Governor-General of the Philippines, and Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt, who hand-picked him as a successor.
As president he pursued more antitrust suits than Roosevelt had, but a split with his old friend led Roosevelt to run against him in 1912, handing the election to Woodrow Wilson. Taft finished third — the only sitting president ever to do so.
In 1921 President Harding appointed him Chief Justice of the United States, the job he had always wanted. He served until 1930 and remains the only person to have led both the executive and judicial branches.
Why the Stach Became Iconic
Taft\'s wide, upturned handlebar was the grand finale of the golden age of presidential facial hair. After him, no president has worn a mustache — more than a century and counting. Mr. Stach considers this a national emergency.
