The Story

About Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (1858–1919) was the 26th President of the United States, serving from 1901 to 1909 after the assassination of William McKinley. A sickly, asthmatic child who willed himself into a boxer, rancher, and big-game hunter, he served as New York City police commissioner, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and governor of New York before reaching the White House at 42 — still the youngest person ever to hold the office.

He led the Rough Riders up Kettle Hill and San Juan Heights in 1898, busted trusts, built the Panama Canal, and created the modern conservation movement with national parks, forests, and monuments. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War.

After leaving office he went on an African safari, ran again in 1912 as the Progressive ("Bull Moose") candidate, and survived being shot during a campaign speech — which he finished. He explored an uncharted Brazilian river in 1914 and died in his sleep in 1919.

Why the Stach Became Iconic

The Roosevelt mustache is thick, bristling, and squared off, sitting above a famous toothy grin and below pince-nez spectacles. It is the most caricatured mustache in American political history, and it perfectly matches the man: loud, energetic, and impossible to ignore.

It is carved sixty feet tall on Mount Rushmore, which is more than most mustaches can say.
