The Story of the Stach

Why Robin Hood's Mustache Matters

Errol Flynn was the definitive swashbuckler of the 1930s, and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) is the role that defined him. Shot in glorious three-strip Technicolor, the film features Flynn in green tights, a feathered cap and a slim, perfectly drawn pencil mustache that would become his trademark.

The mustache is pure adventure-hero styling — thin enough to look elegant, dark enough to read on camera, and always in place no matter how many castle walls he climbs. It is the template that Inigo Montoya, Zorro and countless others have since borrowed.

The film won three Academy Awards and remains one of the most entertaining adventure pictures of the studio era, mustache very much included.
