The Story

About George Parros

George Jon Parros was born in 1979 in Washington, Pennsylvania, and grew up in New Jersey. He played college hockey at Princeton, earning an economics degree, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings. He reached the NHL in 2005 and found his calling as an enforcer, one of the most respected fighters of his era.

His best years came with the Anaheim Ducks from 2006 to 2012, including the franchise's first Stanley Cup in 2007. He went on to play for the Florida Panthers and Montreal Canadiens before retiring in 2014 with more than 1,000 penalty minutes and a reputation as one of the game's gentlemen.

In 2017 the NHL named him head of its Department of Player Safety, putting the league's most famous former fighter in charge of policing it. He also co-founded the hockey lifestyle brand Violent Gentlemen.

The Verdict

Why the Stach Became Iconic

Parros's thick black mustache, worn with long hair under the helmet, became a cult object in Anaheim. The Ducks sold fake "Parros mustaches" and "Stache" T-shirts, with proceeds going to charity, and fans wore them in the stands by the thousands.

It was the enforcer's mustache perfected: menacing at a distance, friendly up close, and attached to an Ivy League economist.
